Pandemic Positivity #1: Radiate

“Pandemic Positivity?” you ask? Nope, I’m not happy there’s a pandemic. It scares me and saddens me and frustrates me. But I’ve been thinking a lot about the good that there is to be extracted from this bizarre and all too often tragic time. I know that the fear and tragedy and isolation has had a really intense effect on people who already had mental health struggles before this madness began, so I think it’s more important now than ever to spread positivity. And I want to try to use my blog to do that in my own way.

Like that big wave-pool wave at your favourite water park, the memories this song conjures crash into me and wash across my brain. There isn’t necessarily one thing, but a crazy jumble of things.

Puberty. One minute you’re 14 going on 15. Then it’s your birthday and you open a present and suddenly you’re aware that there’s a new perception of you. You were always just a kid. Presents had been fun. But now you’re turning into an adult. Or some scrawny, embryonic, grease-and-pimple-faced facsimile of one. And presents could be a little something other than fun.

When my grandfather died, of a stroke at age 88, I was obsessed with this song and the album it came from, Carnavas. It was Silversun Pickups’ full-length debut and it rocked my world.
